Pluripotent stem cells can give rise to any fetal or adult cell type. However, alone they cannot develop into a fetal or adult animal because they lack the potential to contribute to extra embryonic tissue, such as the placenta. In contrast to pluripotent stem cells, many progenitor cells are multipotent, i.e. they are capable of differentiating into a limited number of tissue types.

Pluripotent adult stem cells represent a promising alternative to embryonic stem cells, easing up the debates and polemics aroused by the latter, which requires destroying the embryo. Basically, stem cells can regenerate any organ, the constituents of blood, mucosa and all other types of tissues (nervous tissue, heart, muscle, bone, etc.)
